Copper Harbor - Epic Again

It was another epic weekend in Copper Harbor..not because of the racing but because of the 50mph winds that ushed in the weekend of events. From friday until saturday the town was battered with rains and wind that managed to drop hundreds of trees across the race trails(as well as the roads). Thanks to a large group of volunteers, the trees were removed by Saturday afternoon just in time for the inaugural Super D race. While over 40 participated in the Super D, another 350 converged for Sunday's distance races. Adventure 212 took three of the top titles with our own Pete Karinen hitting it hard to take home the fourth of the prized 'wheel' trophies. All the results are available at www.itiming.com, while lots of sweet pictures from Greg Maino can be found at www.juskuz.com

Congrats Nina!

Picture courtesy of the Daily Mining Gazette. See their full race report here:

Another great race day is in the books with CCS rider Nina Karinen taking first in the short race for the women and Parker McColl edging out Pete Karinen in the men's short race. In the long race Tyler Gauthier from Marquette took the overall with Beth Wagner from Pelican Lake, Wisconin taking the women's title. A usually dry race course was damp and slippery from rain, but no complaints were heard as over 150 participants ventured out on a newly designed race route. A thumbs up to race director Marc Norton and congrats on pulling off a fun filled event. Full results are at www.greatdeerchase.org

Group Adventures

It is the highlight of summer, gathering up your riding buddies and heading out on the trails. Thanks to numerous riding groups in the Keweenaw, folks can find a ride almost any day of the week. On Wednesdays Cross Country Sports serves as the ride guide and we love getting people out on new and old trails. This year we've added some adventure rides in to inspire people to find new places to ride, to explore the random logging roads of the area and to just enjoy the Keweenaw. Hope thay you can join us on a Wednesday and if not, maybe you are getting out on Mondays with the Trekkers group, Tuesdays with the kids, Thursdays in Copper Harbor or any other day. Biking season = the best season (at lease until it snows).

Chain Drive Bike Race Special for Karinen Family

HANCOCK - Six family members from the Karinen family participated in the Portage Health Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival bike race over the weekend, a seventh stood by and cheered as four of the kids won their respective divisions and the eighth member was in the minds and hearts of all seven of them.

Bill Karinen of Painesdale died in a tragic accident Dec. 16, and organizers of the annual Chain Drive Festival recognized him Saturday by dedicating the race to Bill, who was an avid biker and participant in the event since it started.

"This is one of those races that meant a lot to him," said Lisa Karinen, Bill's widow. "He had a passion for biking; he was always out biking with the kids, so to them, biking is carrying on the memory of him."

What a fitting ride for the family's first Father's Day without Bill, especially for Pete Karinen, the 14-year-old wunderkind who finished just under a minute and a half behind his father in last year's run.

Pete cruised through the 16-mile race this year, finishing in 1:07:02.7, winning first overall.

"This race meant a lot to him and his father," Lisa said. "The two of them were so close."

About 15 minutes after Pete came in, his 16-year-old sister Nina came into the finishing gate, finishing fourth overall in the women's division and first for the 16-18 year olds.

"I love it, I love this race," Nina said. "It meant a lot to us that they dedicated the race to him. He's who I thought about all race."

Twelve-year-old Oskar Karinen also participated in the 16-mile race, racing tire-to-tire with full grown men three, four or even five times his age and finished third in his age group at 1:27:43.3, while also taking first place in the 13-and-under 3-mile race that took place after the 32-mile bikers came in.

"I just go as hard as I can, and don't really pay attention to everyone else," Oskar said. "I just pass as many people as I can."

Heidi (9) and Ethel (7) participated in the 9-and-under girls 1.5-mile race, with Heidi winning in 9:43.4 and Ethel taking second place.

The youngest of the Karinens, Sami, 4, participated in the .75-mile race, finishing the course in 8:47.

The Karinens were six of nearly 350 participants, including 192 in the 16-mile Chain Drive, 109 in the 32-mile Chain Drive and 47 kids participating in the junior Chain Drive.

"It's another good turnout for the race. We've slowly crept up in numbers each year," event organizer Lori Hauswirth said. "We had good weather, lots of volunteers and the course is in great shape."

A new event was also dedicated to Bill.

"Since it's Father's Day weekend we're combining race totals between children and parents and that part of the race is now called the Bill Karinen Family Challenge (sponsored by Cross Country Sports)," Hauswirth said. "It's a good family aspect to the weekend that a lot of people participated in."

In the 32-mile men's expert, Brian Matter, of Sheboygan, Wis., and Mike Anderson, of Alpena, finished with identical 2:07:01.7 marks, while Sara Kylander-Johnson, of Duluth, Minn., won the women's expert in 2:32:31. Jackie Pribyl of Stillwater, Minn. took first in the women's 16-mile race, finishing in 1:20:11.3.

Let the Racing Begin..Even With Snow

The CCS race crew is already on the road. May 2nd at the WORS Iola Bump and Jump, CCS employee Andrew I was the lone local finisher in the Expert Class placing 69 our of 94, Pete Karinen took first in the 14 & under (good for 4th overall in the 15m event), and Nina Karinen was first in the womens 15-18 (9th overall in the womens 15 mile).

At the Rasta Rally on May 8th, despite snow on the ground at race start, CCS employees Andrew I and Pat Szub took on the 25 mile event. Pat finished 4th in the 40 plus age group. Pete Karinen (with a chain break) and Nina Karinen placed first in the age groups in the 15 mile while Oscar Karinen took first in age and 2nd overall in the 7 mile. Heidi, Ethel and Sam Karinen killed it as usual in the untimed events....just wait until there's a clock on these little ones.

Weather - Unseasonably Warm

Despite mother nature's best efforts to spoil the winter fun, the 2010 Great Bear Chase is in the books. A week of warm weather diminished the snow pack resulting in significant changes to the course including elimination of the downtown start and finish. Despite the changes, over 300 skiers pushed their way through soggy trails to the finish of another successful Keweenaw event.
Results are up at: www.bearchase.org Photos will be up soon at: www.brockit.com but until then the photo above was grabbed from Greg Maino at www.juskuz.com who was shooting on behalf of brockit.com
Looks like spring is here or maybe its just a teaser.....

Is it Great Bear Chase Time?

Even though its 40 and sunny outside, don't let it fool you...the weather here can change in an instant. What's in store for the Great Bear Chase on Saturday, March 13th? Hard to say but we've had everything from well below zero to 40+, so keep an eye on the forecast to determine if it will be warm weather klister or the hardest cold weather wax in your bag.

If you are looking for other activities to take in over the weekend, head on over to http://www.copperdog150.com/ and find out about this new dogsledding event being held the same weekend as Bear Chase.
